Shed Base Cost in Dublin - the Real Numbers in 2026

shed base cost dublin

You’ve probably spent the last 20 minutes desperately googling ‘shed base cost Dublin’ only to be met with a wall of generic responses telling you to ‘get in touch for a quote’. Thing is, “get in touch for a quote” is just a smooth way of saying “we’re not going to give you a straight answer.”

Fair enough though. Every garden is different. But come on, you deserve a rough idea of what to expect before you even pick up the phone. So here it is – some genuine numbers, no nonsense, from someone who pours concrete all over Dublin on a regular basis.

Still trying to figure out which shed base is right for you? Our Shed Base Installation Dublin guide pretty much covers all your options from start to finish.

So, Why Won’t Anyone Give You a Straight Answer on Shed Base Prices?

To cut a long story short – it varies. A lot.

A small 6×4 in a garden with decent access and flat ground – that’s a half-day job, in and out by lunchtime. Easy peasy.

Now compare that to a 10×8 shed in a terraced house in Cabra where the concrete has to be carted in through the kitchen on a wheelbarrow because there’s no side entrance. Same material, completely different story.

Most contractors dodge the pricing conversation because they’re worried someone will call them out on it if they give a number. Utterly wrong approach, if you ask me. It’s your money, you should have a rough idea of what you’re getting.

What Does a Shed Base Actually Cost in Dublin?

Right. Here’s the lowdown. Typical prices for Dublin in 2026, materials and labour included – your specific job might be a bit more or a bit less, but this should give you a rough idea.

Base TypeGuide cost per m²Best Suited For
Concrete slab€100 – €150Heavy timber sheds, garden offices, workshops
Paving slabs€125 – €190Smaller sheds, decorative finish
Modular plastic panels (EcoBase)€60 – €90Small metal sheds, budget jobs
Gravel & timber frame€70 – €100Sloped gardens, good drainage required

Pricing update, September 2026: our paving slab bases are now €125 – €190 per m², around 25% above an equivalent poured concrete base. Slabs use more materials and every one of them is bedded and levelled by hand. The final price depends on size, ground preparation and access.

For a typical 8×6 shed (around 4.5 m²), you’re probably looking at €270 to €855 depending on what base you go for and how tricky the site is. A 10×8 concrete base in a normal Dublin garden? That’ll be €750 to €1,100.

No, really, those aren’t made-up numbers. That’s what the jobs actually come in at.

What Messes the Price Up (or Down)?

The base material is only half the story. It’s what goes on around it that really makes the difference – and this is the bit nobody ever explains properly.

Access

Massive factor. Dublin is chock-full of terraced houses with no side entrance – especially around Drumcondra (Dublin 9), Phibsborough (Dublin 7), and the older estates in Dublin 11. No side gate means everything goes through the house. More time, more labour, more mess. And that all adds up.

Other way round? Wide side gate, garden backing onto a lane – the lads can just pull up close with the mixer. Total different job.

Soil Type

Here’s something people almost never think about until they’re up to their knees in it – literally.

Around Blanchardstown, Clonee, and a lot of North Dublin, the ground is heavy clay soil. Clay holds water, water soaks into the ground, and the ground gets all soft. So your base can start to shift.

For larger sheds and permanent structures, the fix costs more: dig deeper – 250mm instead of 150mm – lay a thicker bed of 804 hardcore, compact it properly with a whacker plate. That extra stone and dig time pushes the price up by about 15-20%.

For small sheds, different story. The base can often just go straight on top of the existing ground – no deep excavation needed. Faster job. Lower cost.

Sandy or gravelly soil? Good for you. Easier to prep, better drainage, lower cost across the board.

Base Type

Concrete isn’t the cheap option – gravel and plastic panels both come in lower – but for a heavy garden office or a big timber workshop? It’s the only sensible choice. Pour it once, cure it properly, and you won’t have to think about it again for thirty years. Worth every cent.

Paving slabs look nice and are easier to lift down the line if a pipe ever needs attention. They do cost more than concrete now, around €125 to €190 per m², because every slab is bedded and levelled by hand. Solid option for smaller sheds where the garden has to look a certain way.

Modular plastic panels? Fast. Cheap. Fine for small metal sheds from Sheds Direct Ireland – they actually sell a purpose-built kit. For anything heavier or more permanent, though, they don’t have the rigidity. Wrong tool for the job.

Size of the Base

Of course – a 6×4 takes a fraction of the time and effort and a heap less material compared to a 12×10 to get done. The rate per square metre drops a bit on bigger jobs as the setup time starts to get balanced out – but you’re still going to spend a lot more in total.

A Real Job: Dublin 18, February 2026

Here’s one we did a few months back. Corner garden in Dublin 18, pretty small plot with decorative concrete fence panels on two sides. Customer was getting a Steeltech steel shed and needed a solid concrete pad down before delivery.

Finished concrete shed base built against a wall in Dublin

Had a fair bit of side access, but the soil was clay underneath – pretty standard for that part of Dublin 18. There was a drain cover we had to work around – and you’d be surprised how many times we come across these things.

What we did: dug out 200mm of soil, laid 804 hardcore, compacted it with a plate on the back of the lorry, slapped a DPM (Damp Proof Membrane – non-negotiable for steel sheds, stops condensation building up under the floor) down, set the timber shuttering, poured a 30N concrete pad (the minimum Steeltech asks for), and screeded it flat. All done in a day. Had to come back a couple of days later and strip the shuttering.

Cost on a job like that – concrete base about 4-5 m², decent access, manageable clay soil – usually comes in at €500 to €700 all-in. DPM, 804 stone, concrete, shuttering timber, and labour. No nasty surprises on the invoice.

That’s the kind of transparency you want from a quote.

Concrete vs Paving Slabs vs Gravel – Which One is Worth It?

Depends what your shed is for.

Garden office, gym, big workshop? Concrete all the way. No contest. The weight demands it, and you want zero movement over time – doors need to open and close the same in December as they do in July.

Storing tools and garden furniture? Slabs do the job and look pretty good too. Easy enough to lift and replace if something underneath needs attention.

Small steel shed on a budget? Gravel and plastic panels. Won’t win any design awards, but it works, drains well, and it’s up in half a day.

One thing worth saying – whatever you pick, don’t skip the sub-base prep. That 804 hardcore layer is what stops the whole thing sinking into Dublin soil over time. We’ve seen bases poured straight onto clay with no stone underneath. Just fine for a year. After two wet winters? Cracked and tilted. Not worth saving a few quid on.

Can You DIY a Shed Base?

Technically? Yeah, sure – YouTube’s got loads of tutorials on it.

But here’s what those videos don’t show – the aftermath. The door that catches all winter because the surface is 4mm out. The corner that drops after a wet January because the sub-base wasn’t compacted properly. The condensation inside a steel shed because nobody thought to slap down a DPM.

Getting it right isn’t rocket science. But the margin for error is tiny – and the consequences creep up on you slowly. Usually six months after the shed’s been sitting there, when fixing it means taking the whole thing apart.

Your call. But if you’re spending €1,500 plus on a good shed, saving a couple of hundred on the base and risking it all seems like a pretty poor trade-off.

Frequently Asked Questions About Shed Base cost in Dublin

How much does a concrete shed base cost in Dublin?

Between €100 and €150 per square metre, labour and materials included. A typical 8×6 base will cost about €500 to €700 – give or take, depending on access and what the ground’s like under your garden.

Not always – a modular panel system like the EcoBase from Sheds Direct or a compacted gravel base will work just fine for smaller metal sheds. Concrete is better suited for heavier or permanent structures – offices, workshops, big timber sheds.

A proper quote should cover excavation (on bigger jobs), doing the sub-base with 804 hardcore, slapping a Damp Proof Membrane (DPM) down where the shed type needs it, the base material, levelling, and cleanup. If someone quotes you just for “pouring concrete” with no mention of what goes underneath – start asking questions.

Access – that’s the main headache. Do you go with the wide side gate or plough all the materials through the kitchen – that’s a completely different conception of the job anyway. And then of course there’s the soil type to bear in mind, especially when you’re working on a big dig in North Dublin’s notoriously soggy clay soil. Plus, you’ve got the base type to sort out – concrete costs a pretty penny, slabs are more again and gravel the cheapest of all.

Most of the time the job gets done in just one day, but the concrete needs to sit there for two or three days before you can start piling weight onto it. With gravel and panel bases, the shed can go straight on in.

Yeah, on the materials alone it probably is – but you’ll need to hire a plate compactor, get hold of some decent hardcore (grade 804 to be specific, not pea gravel – one of the most common mistakes people make), and sort out your levels to within a mm or two. If you’re handy and can spare the time then go for it, otherwise the labour charge exists for a reason.
