Project: End-of-Garden Base Against a Painted Wall - Clontarf, August 2026

  • Location: Clontarf, Dublin 3 (Residential Back Garden)
  • Project Type: Concrete foundation for a garden shed
  • Key Feature: Base along the back boundary wall, reached by a stepping stone path across the lawn

The Challenge: Keeping the Lawn and the Path Intact

The shed was going at the far end of the garden, against the painted block wall at the back. Between the house and that spot there was a lawn and a stepping stone path, and both were staying where they were.

So the base had to go in without turning the garden into a building site, and it had to line up with the wall rather than sit at an odd angle to it.

The Solution: A Straight Base Along the Wall

Same method we use on every concrete base:

  1. Dig out and sub-base: the ground was dug out and a compacted 804 hardcore sub-base went in.
  2. DPM: a damp proof membrane went over the hardcore before the pour.
  3. Formwork and pour: the timber formwork ran parallel to the wall, and the concrete was poured and levelled inside it.

The Result: A Base That Belongs at the End of the Garden

The base runs along the wall at the end of the lawn, and the stepping stones now lead straight up to it. The lawn around it is untouched.

Project Technical Specs:

  • Base Type: Concrete slab
  • Sub-base: Compacted 804 hardcore
  • Protection: DPM
  • Setting: Against a painted block boundary wall, on a lawn with a stepping stone path

Project: Corner Base in a Finished Garden - Clontarf, July 2026

  • Location: Clontarf, Dublin 3 (Residential Back Garden)
  • Project Type: Concrete foundation for a garden shed
  • Key Feature: Corner base against timber fencing, beside artificial grass and porcelain paving

The Challenge: Working Around a Finished Garden

This garden was already done: artificial grass, porcelain paving and timber fencing on two sides. The shed was going into the back corner, so the base had to sit tight into the corner, square to both fences, right next to surfaces that had to come out of the job looking the same as before.

The Solution: A Clean Pour Inside Timber Formwork

Same method we use on every concrete base:

  1. Dig out and sub-base: the ground was dug out and a compacted 804 hardcore sub-base went in.
  2. DPM: a damp proof membrane went over the hardcore before the pour.
  3. Formwork and pour: the timber formwork was set square to both fence lines, with the artificial grass and the paving left untouched right up to the boards.

The Result: A Square Base That Fits the Corner

The base fills the corner neatly, square to both fences and alongside the paving, ready for the shed once the concrete has cured.

Project Technical Specs:

  • Base Type: Concrete slab
  • Sub-base: Compacted 804 hardcore
  • Protection: DPM
  • Setting: Corner against timber fencing, beside artificial grass and porcelain paving

Project: The Corner Fit - Shed Base & Drainage Management - Dublin, March 2026

  • Location: Dublin 18 (Residential Back Garden)
  • Project Type: Foundation for a multi-purpose timber shed
  • Key Feature: Corner geometry with decorative fencing and integrated drain access

The Challenge: Drainage and Decorative Fencing

This project was a classic Dublin suburban challenge. The customer wanted their shed tucked into a specific corner that featured decorative concrete fence panels and, more importantly, a surface water drain.

You cannot simply build over a drain cover or block the natural runoff of a garden corner. The base needed to be perfectly angled to allow for water drainage while remaining level for the shed itself.

The Solution: Custom Groundwork in Tight Quarters

We spent extra time on the survey phase for this one.

  1. Strategic Placement: We positioned the base to ensure full access to the existing drainage pipework while maximizing the useable corner space.
  2. Sub-base Engineering: We used a depth of 200mm of compacted 804 hardcore in this corner to account for the proximity to the drainage trench and ensure the soil wouldn’t settle unevenly.
  3. Finish & Flow: The concrete was screeded with a micro-fall away from the decorative fencing. This ensures that during a heavy Dublin downpour, water doesn’t pool against the base of the shed or the fence posts.

The Result: A Smart, Integrated Foundation

The base looks like it was always part of the garden design, fitting snugly between the decorative panels. The customer now has a rock-solid foundation that respects the garden’s existing infrastructure and will keep their shed level for decades.

Project Technical Specs:

  • Base Type: Reinforced Concrete Slab
  • Sub-base: 200mm Clause 804 Hardcore
  • Protection: PVC Weed membrane & DPM
  • Drainage: Integrated surface water bypass

Zim and his team did 2 pieces of work for us, originally we had a concrete base for a shed, and later had the concrete extended the full length of the garden. Both times the lads were great. They were respectful, efficient, friendly & very tidy. We’re delighted with the results & would highly recommend!

Project: Space-Saving Concrete Base Against Boundary Wall - Dublin, February 2026

  • Location: South Dublin (Residential Estate)
  • Project Type: Permanent concrete foundation for a storage shed
  • Key Feature: Flush-wall placement to maximize garden space

The Challenge: Maximizing Every Inch

In many Dublin back gardens, space is at a premium. For this project, the homeowner wanted a solid storage shed but didn’t want it sitting in the middle of their lawn. The plan was to tuck it right up against the existing block boundary wall.

The technical difficulty here is ensuring the excavation doesn’t undermine the wall and that the levels are perfect so water doesn’t pool between the shed and the masonry.

The Solution: A Precise Structural Pour

We cleared the area and began the groundwork. In Dublin, you’re usually dealing with clay soil that can shift, so we went deep on the sub-base.

  1. Ground Preparation: We excavated and laid 150mm of certified 804 hardcore. This was compacted using a whacker plate until it provided a structural, non-shifting platform.
  2. Formwork: We set up timber shuttering on the open sides to contain the pour, ensuring the base remained perfectly square.
  3. Concrete Pour: We used a high-spec C20 concrete mix, screeded to a smooth plate finish. We kept the height slightly above the surrounding grass level to prevent water ingress during typical Dublin downpours.

The Result: A Clean, Space-Efficient Base

The finished pad is solid, level, and ready for a lifetime of use. By building flush against the wall, we saved the homeowner nearly a metre of garden width compared to a standard standalone placement.

Project Technical Specs:

  • Dimensions: 2.5m x 2.0m
  • Depth: 150mm concrete on 150mm 804 stone
  • Finish: Smooth screed
  • Access: Side gate wheelbarrow access

Project: Maximum Quality - The Precision Pour & Shuttering - Dublin, February 2026

  • Location: Carrickmines, Dublin 18 (South Dublin)
  • Project Type: High-strength concrete base for a large garden building
  • Key Feature: Professional timber formwork and full DPM protection

The Challenge: Maximizing Every Inch

The biggest enemy of a garden shed in Ireland isn’t the rain – it’s ground moisture. For this project, the customer had a high-end timber shed on order. Without a proper barrier, moisture from the Dublin clay would rise through the concrete and rot the floor joists within years.

The goal here was to demonstrate a “no-shortcuts” installation: perfect levels, a structural sub-base, and a non-negotiable damp proof membrane.

The Solution: The Professional Process Step-by-Step

We didn’t just dump concrete on the ground. We followed our strict 5-step process:

  1. Precision Shuttering: We built custom timber formwork to provide a perfectly square and straight edge. This isn’t just for looks – it ensures the shed sits exactly where it should without any dangerous overhang.
  2. Moisture Protection (DPM): We laid a heavy-duty Damp Proof Membrane (the black layer visible in our process shots). This creates a watertight barrier between the soil and the concrete slab.
  3. The Wet Pour: We used a durable C20 concrete mix. While the concrete was wet, we screeded it back and forth to ensure a perfectly level surface. In a garden with a slight slope, this precision is what makes the difference during shed assembly.

The Result: A Foundation Built for Decades

By the time the concrete was screeded, the base was level to within 2mm across the entire span. This professional groundwork ensures the shed doors will never jam and the floor will stay dry for the next 20+ years.

Project Technical Specs:

  • Base Material: C20 Concrete (Wet Pour)
  • Formwork: 4×2 pressure-treated timber shuttering
  • Barrier: 1200-gauge polyethene DPM
  • Sub-base: 150mm compacted 804 aggregate
