Garden Shed Makeovers Dublin - Before & After Foundations (2026)
Most shed makeovers we get called out for in Dublin? They start with a phone call that goes something like “the shed’s grand, but the floor’s gone soft” or “we’re getting a new shed and the old base is a wreck”. Nine times out of ten, the shed isn’t really the problem. It’s what’s underneath.
A proper shed base in Dublin typically runs anywhere from €300 to €1,500 – it really depends on the size, how much ground preparation is needed, and the access to the garden. There’s no flat rate, because no two gardens are the same. Get the foundation right and a decent steel or timber shed will sit happy for 15-20 years. Get it wrong and you’ll be back to square one before your fifth winter.
One thing worth saying up front: we do bases only, not sheds. You sort the shed, we make sure it has something solid to sit on. This isn’t a sales pitch either. It’s the pattern we see week in, week out. Same failures, same fixes, same conversations. Here’s what actually causes shed makeovers in Dublin gardens, and what a proper before-and-after looks like in practice.
The Four Failures That Trigger Most Shed Makeovers
Different gardens, different sheds, the same handful of base problems keep showing up. If your shed needs replacing or “feels off”, chances are it’s one of these.
1. Breeze blocks (or bricks) straight on grass. The classic. Quick to set up, costs maybe €40 in materials. Lasts about three winters before the blocks sink unevenly into the soil and the shed starts twisting. Floor goes soft in the corners. Door catches on the frame. There’s a sweet damp smell when you open it. Classic.
2. Shed sitting directly on an existing patio. Looks like a clever shortcut. Isn’t. Patios are usually laid with a fall to shed water away from the house – which means once the shed goes on top, all that runoff hits the back wall of the shed and pools. Timber goes black at the base. The floor inside warps. Total mess.
3. Bricks or blocks on a slope. The shed sits at an angle from day one and the weight slowly works the supports apart. Even on a gentle slope of 300-400mm, you’re looking at base failure within a few years. The shed itself stays salvageable, but the “foundation” was never really one.
4. Loose gravel with no edging. A properly built stabilised gravel base is fine. A bag of pea gravel raked flat under a shed is not the same thing. Without edging restraint, the stone spreads outward, the level changes, and weeds work up through the joints between the shed floor and the surface.
Spot the theme? None of these are actually bases. They’re improvisations. And every makeover job we do is essentially the same fix: rip out the improvisation, put down a real foundation.
What a Proper Before-and-After Looks Like
Here’s the kind of job we run all the time around Dublin. A real example from a Dublin 18 back garden – a customer who wanted a small 2.4m x 1.8m (8ft x 6ft) shed to sit properly between the boundary walls of a tight terraced-house garden.
Before: Bare grass corner. Soft, uneven, sloped slightly toward the back wall. No way to put a shed there directly without it twisting within a season.
The build:
- Excavate the area roughly 150mm below finished level, with the dig wider than the shed footprint by about 150mm on each side. The extra width matters – it lets you set proper edge formwork.
- Lay 100mm of compacted 804 hardcore across the whole area. Two passes with the whacker plate. 804 hardcore is graded crushed stone with fines that bind together when compacted – it’s the structural layer.
- Install timber 2×4 shuttering around the perimeter to hold the concrete in shape while it cures.
- Where the shed will be a steel one, lay a DPM (Damp Proof Membrane) before pouring. Steel sheds need this to stop ground moisture wicking up into the floor.
- Pour a C20 concrete slab at around 100mm thick, screeded level with a slight fall away from the back wall for runoff.
- Two days of curing before anything goes on top.
After: A solid, level pad sitting tidily into the corner of the garden, ready to take any small-to-medium shed. The kind of base that disappears under the shed once it’s installed but does its job silently for the next 20 years.

That’s the whole point of a makeover. Not flashy. Not visible once the shed’s on it. Just right.
What a Dublin Shed Base Actually Costs
Here’s the honest answer most people don’t get: there’s no fixed price. A shed base in Dublin lands somewhere between €300 and €1,500, and where it falls on that range comes down to two things above all – the size of the base, and how much ground preparation the garden needs.
Preparation is the bit that swings the price. A flat, firm, accessible garden with a small footprint sits at the bottom end. A sloped garden, soft or waterlogged ground, a big footprint, or materials that have to be carted through the house – any of those push it up. That’s not us being vague; it’s just the reality of groundwork. The same size base can cost very different amounts in two gardens a street apart.
Access matters too. A wide side gate keeps things simple. Materials wheeled through the kitchen, one barrow at a time, adds labour. For the full breakdown across all base types and Dublin pricing realities, our shed base cost guide goes into the detail.
If you’re working with limited room, the small garden shed solutions guide covers the trade-offs for tight terraced-house gardens specifically.

What About the Old Shed?
Most makeovers we do end with a brand new shed going on top – that’s how the vast majority of jobs go. The old one is usually past saving, the customer’s already bought a replacement, and the whole point of the job is a fresh start.
So here’s how it works in practice. We focus on the base. You sort out the new shed – whether that’s from Sheds Direct Ireland, a local supplier, or one you’ve had delivered. They’re great at delivering and assembling, but the foundation isn’t their job. That’s the gap we fill.
If there’s an old shed in the way, we can take it down for you – around €200 depending on size and condition. Worth being clear on one thing: that covers dismantling it and clearing the spot so we can build, but not hauling the old materials away. Skip hire or a trip to the recycling centre is a separate job, and usually cheaper to sort yourself.
Then it’s straightforward. We get the base in and cured, ready a day or so before your new shed arrives, so it goes straight onto a finished pad. No waiting around, no shed sitting on bare ground while concrete sets.
Why the Base Matters More Than the Shed Itself
Met Eireann gives Dublin around 150 wet days a year – you can check the data on Met Eireann’s climate page if you want the actual numbers. Add the freeze-thaw cycle from January and February, and Dublin clay soil that holds water for days after rain, and you’ve got an environment that punishes anything resembling a “temporary” base.
A proper foundation costs more upfront than a few breeze blocks from the builder’s merchant. But amortised over 15-20 years of shed life, it’s the cheapest part of the whole setup. We see the failed bases every week. Same conversation every time.
If the shed itself was poor quality, that’s a separate problem. But if you’ve spent good money on a decent timber or steel shed and you’re putting it on improvised supports, you’re not saving money – you’re scheduling its replacement.
Planning Permission for Shed Makeovers
Planning permission, updated 9 August 2026. Most shed replacements need none. Since 27 July 2026 the limit went up from 25 m² to 30 m², and at least 25 m² of private open space still has to remain. A like-for-like replacement on an existing footprint is never an issue.
For a like-for-like replacement on an existing footprint? Zero issue. That covers most makeovers.
What to Take From All This
Look, if your shed’s gone wonky, your floor’s soft, your door catches, or there’s that damp smell – the base is almost always the culprit. And here’s the thing they rarely tell you when you buy a new shed: they don’t do the base. Sheds Direct Ireland is great at delivering and assembling sheds, but you better have your foundation done before.
That’s where we come in. Twenty years of doing groundwork in Dublin gardens through our heritage brand Driveways and Patios Dublin. Concrete, paving, gravel, modular panels – whatever fits the shed, the garden, and the budget. We’ve seen every failure mode there is and we know how to avoid them.
If you’re thinking about a shed makeover, the first question isn’t “what shed do I want” – it’s “what’s the base going to be”. Get that conversation right and the rest follows. The full pillar guide on shed base installation in Dublin walks through every option in detail.

FAQ - Garden Shed Makeovers Dublin
How much does a shed base cost in Dublin?
A shed base in Dublin runs between €300 and €1,500. There’s no flat rate – the price comes down to the size of the base and, above all, how much ground preparation the garden needs. A small, flat, accessible garden sits at the bottom of that range; a sloped or soft-ground garden, a larger footprint, or awkward access pushes it up. We quote each garden on what it actually needs after a quick look.
Do you supply the shed as well as the base?
No – we do bases only. You sort out the shed (from Sheds Direct Ireland, a local supplier, or wherever you like) and we make sure it has a solid, level foundation to sit on. If there’s an old shed in the way, we can take it down for around €200 depending on size, though that doesn’t include hauling the old materials away. Most of our jobs are a fresh base for a brand new shed.
What's the most common problem with old shed bases in Dublin?
Drainage. Nine times out of ten. Either the base sits in a hollow that collects water, or it was built on bare soil with no sub-base, or the surrounding ground falls toward the shed instead of away from it. Dublin clay holds water for days after rain. Without proper drainage built in, the shed sits in damp ground and the floor rots from underneath. Followed closely by basic structural failure – bricks or blocks settling unevenly into soft ground.
How long does a shed base take?
Most jobs are a single day on site for the base work. Then 48-72 hours of curing if it’s concrete, before the new shed can go on. Gravel and paving slab bases are ready immediately. If there’s an old shed to take down first, add roughly half a day. We usually time things so the base is fully cured a day or so before your new shed is due to be delivered.
Do I need planning permission to replace a shed?
Generally no – if the new shed is under 30 square metres and you’re not extending into a front garden. The rules are on citizensinformation.ie and they’re pretty clear. Check with your local council if you’re unsure. Fingal, South Dublin, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown all interpret the same regulations the same way in practice. For a like-for-like replacement on an existing footprint, you’re well within exempted development rules.
Can you reuse the materials from the old base?
Sometimes. Old paving slabs in good nick can go back down on a fresh sub-base if the customer wants to keep the aesthetic. Old concrete usually has to come out, broken up and carted away – it’s almost never level enough to build on. Hardcore can occasionally be recycled if it’s clean and the right grade. We assess on site. No point throwing away material that’s still useful, but no point reusing something that’ll undermine the new base either.
