Shed Base With No Side Access in Dublin: What to Check First

Table of Contents

A shed base with no side access in Dublin may still be possible, but the route through the property needs checking before the job is quoted. Doorways, steps, tight turns and the distance to the garden affect how spoil comes out and materials go in. The shed supplier must check its delivery route separately.

You can have plenty of room for a shed at the back and still have a problem getting the base built. The garden is only part of the job. In a terraced house in Cabra or Phibsborough, the awkward bit might be the hallway, a turn into the kitchen, or a step down from the back door.

Before ordering the shed, show both installers that route. Shed Base Dublin builds the foundation; your shed comes from the supplier you choose. A plan that works for bringing in base materials does not automatically work for bringing in the shed panels.

Measure the narrowest point, not just the front door

A wide front door is useful, but it tells us very little if there is a tight corner further along. Measure the clear opening with doors open, including anything that sticks into the route. A radiator or door handle can make a difference.

Take photos facing both ways. Include steps, changes in floor level and the route out into the garden. Outside, show where materials could be unloaded and how far they would need to travel. A short walk along a straight path is a different job from repeated trips through several rooms.

You do not need to work out the construction method yourself. An honest picture of the access is much more useful than trying to describe it as “a bit tight”. The shed base installation guide explains what happens once the route and the base position have been agreed.

What changes when everything comes through the house?

Ground comes out before new material goes in. That is easy to overlook when you are picturing the finished concrete pad. Excavation produces spoil, and the job also needs room for tools, the compactor and whatever materials the agreed base design requires.

If machines cannot reach the garden, some work may need to be done by hand. That can mean smaller loads and more trips. The team also needs an agreed way to protect floors, door frames and the rooms along the route, with enough space for people to move safely.

Ask how that will work before the lads arrive. Who clears the hallway? Where will the excavated soil go? Does the quote include removing it from the property? Getting those details written down is a better way of saving a few quid than discovering an extra job halfway through.

Can you get concrete into a garden without a side gate?

Sometimes, yes. The workable method depends on the property, the volume needed and the available route. Carrying materials through the house, using suitable access equipment or arranging a concrete pump may be considered, but none should be assumed from a photograph of the lawn.

A concrete pump moves concrete. It does not remove excavated soil, carry in the stone underneath, or solve every access problem. Any pump arrangement needs its own checks for reach, hose routing, delivery position and protection of the property. It should be included in the quotation if required.

Start with the route and the shed specification, then choose the method. Our concrete shed base guide covers the foundation itself. You still need a site assessment to work out how to build it in your particular garden.

Are paving slabs easier or cheaper with awkward access?

Individual slabs can be carried in separately. That can be useful, but each one still needs bedding and levelling, and the prepared ground beneath them still has to be built. Buying a few cheap flags does not remove the labour.

On our current pricing, a paving slab base is around 25% more than an equivalent poured concrete base, because it needs more materials and individual laying work. The final price depends on size, ground preparation and access. Compare options for the same garden and shed footprint.

A gravel or modular base may suit some shed models. Others need a particular concrete detail or support arrangement. Choose from the options your shed supplier accepts, rather than picking whatever looks easiest to get through the kitchen. The shed base cost guide explains the other factors behind the quotation.

Zim and his team did 2 pieces of work for us, originally we had a concrete base for a shed, and later had the concrete extended the full length of the garden. Both times the lads were great. They were respectful, efficient, friendly & very tidy. We’re delighted with the results & would highly recommend!

I have never seen a contractor deliver this standard and finish of work. They arrived at 08:00am and were leaving each day at 7pm. Zim and his time were so organised & professional , incredible work ethic. He kept checking with my wife & I as he progressed and made suggestions which made the finished patio look amazing. The levels, stepping down and marrying into the house and garden is beautifully finished, thank you so much Declan & Ann Marie

Keep the supplier’s base drawing handy

Send the exact shed model and base instructions before agreeing dimensions. The advertised shed size may not tell you everything about the required foundation, and details can differ between ranges from the same supplier.

For example, Sheds Direct Ireland’s base guidance calls for a solid, level foundation and a damp-proof membrane beneath the base for its steel sheds. A damp-proof membrane, or DPM, helps limit moisture rising from the ground. It does not remove every possible cause of condensation inside a shed.

Ask the supplier to confirm the dimensions and installation detail for your model in writing. That gives the base installer and the shed assembly team the same specification to work from.

Two recent bases, two different garden layouts

Here are two recent concrete shed bases: one beside timber fencing and another beside a block boundary wall, with stepping stones leading across the lawn. The timber formwork is still in place.

When sending your own photos, include the garden and the whole approach. Once the base is done and dusted, the shed delivery still needs to happen. Leave the route clear until both teams have finished.

What to send for an access assessment

  • The shed model, dimensions and supplier’s base instructions.
  • A short video from the unloading point to the proposed base position. Pause at the tight turns.
  • Clear measurements of narrow openings, plus photos of steps and changes in level.
  • Show the ground after rain if water collects there. Mention an old base, buried rubble or anything else you already know about.
  • Your area or Eircode and the proposed shed delivery date.

Most straightforward bases take us about a day to install, but restricted access can change the programme. Concrete also needs time before the shed can be installed. Agree that interval with the installer for the mix, weather and intended loading, rather than booking both jobs for the same day.

FAQ - Shed Bases With Restricted Access

Can you build a shed base if my house has no side entrance?

It may be possible, depending on the route through the property and the work required in the garden. We need to check openings, turns, steps and the unloading position before confirming a method or quotation. Send photos of the whole route as well as the proposed base area.

A pump can help move concrete where its use is suitable, but it does not deal with excavation or bringing in the sub-base materials. The delivery position and hose route need checking separately. Ask whether pumping is needed and whether its cost is included in the quotation.

Our current paving slab base pricing is around 25% above an equivalent poured concrete base because of the extra materials and individual laying work. The final price depends on size, ground preparation and access. Restricted access needs assessing for both options before a useful comparison can be made.

Send the clear width at the narrowest openings, photos of tight turns and steps, and the distance from the unloading point to the garden. Include the shed model and its base drawing. A short video following the route often makes the access easier to understand than isolated photographs.

No. Shed Base Dublin builds the foundation, and you buy the shed from your chosen supplier. Ask that supplier to confirm its delivery and assembly access requirements. The route used for base materials may not suit the shed panels, so both parts of the job need checking before booking.

Agree the installation date with the base installer first. Concrete needs time before loading, and the interval depends on the mix, weather and shed requirements. Restricted access can also extend the groundwork. Keep a gap between the two appointments until the base programme and delivery route are confirmed.

Get the access checked before booking delivery

Send us the shed details and a few photos of the route into your garden through the quote form, or ring 086 458 3274. We’ll look at what the job needs before you commit to a delivery date.
